How to Track Conversions with Google Analytics
Google Analytics is new and exciting for people who are not aware of it. It can come off intimidating at times but it does not necessarily indicate that is exactly how it should be. Once you get familiar with the basics, grasping it will not take much time.
With the term analytics, there are different interpretations for people. People associate analytics with something dealt with by technical gurus with multiple degrees. However, an interesting proposition is that analysing website data is not as difficult as it sounds. With the presence of relevant tools now it is much easier to gain insight and knowledge into what’s working.
Create a Google Account
The first and foremost step is the creation of a Google Analytics account. If you want to track your conversion rate then this is the best way and place to start.
Mentioned below are some simple steps that you need to follow while creating your google analytics-
Firstly you have to create a google account. If you have an already existing primary account like youtube, Gmail or google drive for example then it’s better and advisable for you to set up under the same account details. If not then it’s advisable to create a new account.
Sign Up for Google Analytics
After creating the Google account, sign up for google analytics. In this case, there will be a sign-in link present in the upper right-hand corner of your account and you will see a drop-down menu as well. Once you reach there, select analytics. You will also be redirected to a page which will provide you with the option of choosing the google account of your choice.
Once you click on the sign-up, you will be redirected to the next page where you have to select the websites and fill in the details like account name website name URL time zones and industry etc. You will be then redirected to the google analytics account after you hit the I accept button.
Start Tracking Your Website
When you check out your new google analytics account you will come across the tracking id and the analytic tracking code. There are several methods of setting up the website using google analytics code. If you don’t have a WordPress account, you can engage by copy pasting the website tracking code on all the separate website pages that you want to track. You might need to get the help of a web developer if you are unable to do this on your own.
Google analytics can be done with WordPress too. There are several ways you can undertake this but the easiest way to do this is by installing a MonsterInsights plugin and then activating it. Following this, go to the insight tab present in the admin menu and hit on the select settings button.
After this click on the authenticate part with the help of your Google account button. This is followed by choosing the correct google Analytics website profile which you want to authenticate with Monsterinsights. Complete the last step of the process by clicking on the I’m not a robot part and you are all set to now.
After you have successfully installed Google Analytics on your website, you might be thinking that half of the work is done. But it’s not as simple as that. Confused by the sheer complexity of it, many people opt for inserting a tracking code on their website and then wrapping up the entire process. Fundamentally speaking, the initial set up needs to be more or less done by you. But on the brighter side, once you have understood and got rid of the initial hurdles, you will gain some useful insights. While Google Analytics is infused with plenty of aspects, which doesn’t require your immediate learning at this point, you need to understand the conversion goal at first. Once you understand conversion goals, there are a lot of things you can do with it. But for the purpose of this article, we will talk about how to track marketing campaigns.
Create a New Goal
In the first step, you have to choose the admin tab located at the top of the page. This will redirect you to a page having three sections or columns- Account, Property, and View. Click on the view column after which you will see the heading goals. Once you have found that out, go ahead and click on the last heading. Click on the red + New goal button once you have reached the goals page.
Choose Goal Setup
In the second step, under the goal set up part, choose the custom radio button situated at the bottom of the options and click continue.
Enter Goal Description
In the third step, you have to enter the goal description part. Here you have to create a new name for your goal and also choose the type as well. You can choose any name of your choice which will help you remember the conversion type which you are tracking and select the destination type as well. Then press the continue option.
Enter Goal Details
Don’t forget to add or enter the URL for your thank you page. This is the first page that subscribers witness immediately after they opt-in. This needs to be typed in the destination field.
Alternatively, you can also toggle value on to enter the monetary value to the conversion. This should be done only if you are aware of the worth of the email lead. After this is done, hit the save button.
Start Recording
In the next step, google analytics starts to record data through its algorithms and you have to wait patiently.
View your Data
In step six you have to view your data. But since the tracking for the website has just started, there is no data to show. However, if you want to view the data, you can do that by going into acquisitions » Overview and then selecting the new goal which is present under the conversion dropdown menu.
